Another Trad Behaving Badly Bandwagon: The Sign of Peace and My Two Cents

Hello Everyone,

So once again, the TBBs (with some other level headed conservatives) are doing something again and passing the buck around on an issue: The Sign of Peace.

How is this coming about (again?) The Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, one of the Vatican's Papal Congregations, who issues out orders, decrees, evaluations, etc. on the Pope's behalf in the area of liturgy and sacraments, back in June released a letter which was given Pope Francis' approval (!) about the practice in the Mass. It's basically a letter that notes that this part of the Mass is taken for granted and suggests, ways to improve the dignity of this practice.

Unfortunately, this letter has NOT been made available to the general public, including the Congregation`s section of the Vatican website. It was supposedly in Spanish, but the one link is ``not available`` anymore on the website that one blogger linked to. The best I`ll do is to link to ``safe`` traditional blogger priest Fr. John Zuhlsdorf here with a summary of the content and the 4 suggestions.

The four main suggestions, NOT ORDERS, are as follows:

  1. The rite is optional, and there certainly are times and places where it is not fitting.[This IS in the latest edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal.]
  2. “... familiar and worldly gestures of greeting” ¨[a.k.a. hugs and kisses, handshakes] should be substituted with “other, more appropriate gestures.”
  3. The congregation for worship also noted that there are several abuses of the rite which are to be stopped: the introduction of a “song of peace,” which does not exist in the Roman rite; the faithful moving from their place to exchange the sign; the priest leaving the altar to exchange the sign with the faithful; and when, at occasions such as weddings or funerals, it becomes an occasion for congratulations or condolences.
  4. ... episcopal conferences prepare liturgical catechesis on the significance of the rite of peace, and its correct observation.

My thoughts on these matters:

1) The Trad Behaving Badly bloggers have got this wrong in a sense. The letter is NOT AN ORDER, yet they are claiming so. This is a false claim, but this is nothing new from the Church's new "liturgical police." They cheer and applaud anything with some semblence of ordering their perceived "faulty" institutional (and often times, True Catholic Church), back to pre-Vatican II levels of ... well ... everything. Also, it is mostly them alongside more conservative Catholic news sites picking this story up. Not a good sign. Also I feel that the general sentiment is one of "we order you to make these changes ..." vs educational information.

2) The Vatican should have put this and other communications from this Congregation on their website. The oldest is from 2008. Not smart at all. Then again, not surprizing from the media machine of the Vatican. It`s becoming public knowledge that they are not always up to speed on things. Why, it took 7 years for Summorum Pontificum to be posted in English and people had to complain to the Vatican to get that to happen.

3) For the most part for me, I find the sign of peace, tolerable. I am not one of those TBBs who abhors it, and I understand that we CANNOT be like the TBBs on the Catholic blogosphere in their demeanor and their attitudes towards the Novus Ordo. Take note, that passive-aggressive stabs in your writings towards the Novus Ordo and other topics and those who attend the N.O., are also part of that sick rhetoric.

4) As much as I hate to side with the TBBs on something, I do agree that unless bishops force this upon their priests in mandates that are publicly displayed online and to their parishes by fax/letter, they will continue to proceed with such liturgical abuses.

However, I do have preference, not absolute, enforced, necessity, for the Pax of the Latin Mass (as I nickname it in admiration, a good ol' fraternal bear hug.) As for the suggestions, they are all perfectly reasonable and it would be nice to be implemented.

From my experience of 30 years in the Archdiocese of Toronto, I am glad to say for the most part, I have not witnessed much of these abuses from the clergy and liturgical staff at Masses. I have seen lay people get somewhat out of hand, and only recently have I seen this "song of peace" be implemented in Masses with some parishes I go to out in Maple. However, giving the best benefit of the doubt I can, I do not think that the musical staff of these parishes know it is not a vital part of the liturgy. They are laity, not clergy, and likely part of the majority of Catholics who don't know where or what these documents and congregations in the Vatican are. It is more non-willful ignorance on their part vs. outward rebellion against the Church. On the bright side, that's 29 years of living post-Vatican II I have NOT seen the song of peace in the Archdiocese of Toronto, and 30 years where it's not crazy out of control, to the contrasting opinions of the Blogosphere critics.

So that's all on this matter folks. Now, I will leave comments open, but consider this post red flag. Read my blog rules, and don't even think about abusing the freedom or my e-mail here.

Pax, Julian.

A Multitude of Events Today From the Vatican: Consecration of the Vatican State, New Encyclical Lumen Fidei, and Sainting of John XXIII and John Paul II

Hello Everyone,

I awoke late today with a nice weekend off ahead of me from work, only to find a number of great events happening today through our "Motherland", the Vatican State. These three major happenings are going around the Catholic Blogosphere like wild fires!

1) The Holy Father, alongside our Holiness Emeritus Benedict XVI, decided to consecrate the Vatican State to my favourite saint of all, the almighty angel warrior and commander of the armies of angels, St. Michael the Archangel!!! Considering the spiritual assault that the Evil One is launching on our souls and world in increasing intensity, it is highly appropriate to invoke the intercession of the very warrior who bested the traitor in war, banished to the depths of Hell in defeat. Beato Micaheli Archangelo, Ora Pro Nobis!!!

Coverage here: http://www.news.va/en/news/benedict-xvi-joins-pope-francis-in-consecrating-va

2) Pope Francis decided to consecrate two Vatican II popes today: John Paul II and John XXIII, the latter being the one who declared the council and oversaw its first year. Personally, I am not pleased at certain aspects of this move, and think this is a political move by the purely-Vatican II Pope with regards to worshipping the council (vs. respecting the council), not to mention that John XXIII only has one miracle, not two having the state of ``Blessed``. However, the Pope CAN declare sainthood without the requisite two miracles. Now, may you turn your attention to the excellent and precise commentary of the situation below, by Traditionalist icon and online priest, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf of WDTPRS, for the most Catholic interpretation of the events. (Psssst ..... take his word over mine)

3) Now, saving the best for last, The NEW ENCYCLICAL, CLOSING OFF THE THEOLOGICAL VIRTUE SERIES OF BENEDICT XVI IS HERE!!!! LUMEN FIDEI IS RELEASED!!!!!! Definitely going to read it. The four hands of the two Popes, Benedict Emeritus XVI and Francis, penned this encyclical.

Sad, but Not Unexpected .... SSPX Continues to Swell up With Pride and Closes Further Discussion with Vatican

Hello Everyone.

This just popped up in my blog feed thanks to Deacon Greg Kandra's blog:

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/traditionalists-announce-definitive-break-with-catholic-church/

These paragraph say it all, which describe part of their main message on the 25th anniversary of their "ordinations":

"The traditionalist bishops announce that, in practice, the dialogue with the Vatican is over and that from now on, they will wait “either when Rome returns to Tradition and to the Faith of all time – which would re-establish order in the Church.”

Or, “when she explicitly acknowledges our right to profess integrally the Faith and to reject the errors which oppose it, with the right and the duty for us to oppose publicly the errors and the proponents of these errors, whoever they may be – which would allow the beginning of a re-establishing of order.”

Meanwhile “we persevere in the defense of Catholic Tradition and our hope remains entire,” the statement concludes.
"

Well, based on their actions throughout the whole thing, and Fellay's 360 degree turn around to becoming super RadTrad once again to keep the organization "together", I am not surprized they would puff up with pride again and reject Holy Mother Church once more.

When will these people and others in the Church get it? When you are not in union with "Rome" or the Church, you cannot truly do the full works of the Lord and bring salvation to others. This is especially true in their sacraments. They STILL AND NOW HAVE, Only one possible sacrament in the Eucharist as they have Valid, but ILLICIT priests (which is highly controversial), and all their other sacraments are fakes and have no validity as the SSPX does not operate under their diocesan ordinaries in the world (save rumoured and extremely rare cases).

Shame. Absolute same. The world is becoming a more hellish place, Catholicism is being eroded by all forces at the orchestration of Satan, and these guys have such planks in their eyes to help us spiritually fight evil and help restore traditional Catholic worship and practice, and save souls.

Nice going guys. Satan is truly laughing downstairs in the last layer of hell.

Oh well, pax.

What? Gaia Mass in Archdiocese of Toronto??? We Need to Help our Archdiocesan Office.

Hello Everyone,

Look, there's a lot of stuff going out in the blogosphere these days. We can look at it and really wonder who these people are that write these things, or why things happen in archdioceses. The expression is though, that even "a broken clock chimes correctly twice a day." Unfortunately, something did chime in this morning about something in my own archdiocese.

I woke up to find this in my blogger feed. Here the blogger talks about some "Gaia Mass" happening in the diocese at Holy Name Parish staffed by a Fr. Morrasse. Normally this is not the kind of blog I like to give attention to on S.U.D, but this issue, deserved some reflection and attention and I had to think about this one. Is this an over-reaction to the event? What could have happened? What is the parish and Archdiocese saying/doing with regards to this?

Yeah .... it was happening ....

Unfortunately, the claim that the blogger makes that this was featured on the Archdiocesan website under their News and Events page, is true.

I'll reveal something to all of you. A week ago, I did find this entry on their website, while looking for an entry for the St. Joseph's Feast Day Solemn Latin Mass at SLTM (which I found out later, was just that the organizer had not called/e-mailed the archdiocese. No ill will here between both parties, despite others perceptions of the diocesan office with regard to the EF). I took a snapshot of the page:
Found March 17, 2013 on the News and Events Page of the Archdiocesan Website.

Why would I do this? Well, see, I was planning to write one crazy post on the matter. I really went away at it, but I just really felt uncomfortable writing what I had. Now before you go and demand like the crowd in the Passion for me to be crucified for being a failure to the Traditional Catholic community, listen to why I did not.

Something just didn't sit right with me releasing it in a manner like other blogs. I also have a mandate on this blog to be a positive example of the EF community, and not to misrepresent it as a EF-serving/participating Catholic. So before I wanted to do something so "radical," I sought out the council of trusted allies and friends (including a holy and noble priest of the Church) in the Catholic Faith, both of the EF and who are devout but attend the OF. While they too were shocked, I was counseled by them that there are more prudent means than this to go about slogging such a post of that nature. I listened to them and did not release the post. I have it archived on my computer as a personal testament, but also to keep what I found in my research.

However, in light of the revelation, and seeing as I knew about this earlier, I want to give my take on this matter. If you want to know more about the Church's stance on New Age Spirituality, please see this:
The Pontifical Council For Culture & Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue: "JESUS CHRIST THE BEARER OF THE WATER OF LIFE, A Christian reflection on the “New Age.” Please especially view 1.4, 2.1, 2.3.1, as well as the Catechism of the Catholic Church sections 2112-2113, 2120:

My two biggest concerns about this are as follows:
1) By Conducting Such a Mass, if they are still on, it is highly possible that the Masses with be ILLICIT (Not conducted according to Church Law and the Liturgy as set out in the Missal) AND INVALID (NO SACRAMENT WILL TAKE PLACE!)

Plain and simple. If the Mass includes all these elements NOT APPROPRIATE to the liturgy, won`t be conducted according to the proper liturgical norms in the GIRM and the Roman Missal, AND Christ is Not the focus of the Masses, but ``Gaia/Mother" Earth is, then this will violate the three things necessary for a Mass to be valid:
  • Proper Form (Liturgy),
  • Matter (the instuments used AND the correct physical substances of a host with enough gluten to be wheat matter + wine from fermented grapes),
  • and INTENT. The intent will be violated on the basis of Christ not being worshipped and focused on in the Mass. The "Sacrifice" if anything, will be focused on the Earth, a finite/real object. Not our Lord.

More importantly:
2) Possible, Irreparable spiritual damage and harm will be done or started to the faithful, ESPECIALLY the young children involved in the Masses/performances. This can be beginning of damage to their spiritual, psychological, and mental development, or make worse what is already evident in their lives.

Yes, There are likely young children involved in the Mass/orchestra/dancing, etc. This is tied to the Holy Name school and parish, and therefore, some of its parishioners who are children, and/or attend the school, might be part of this production or will see it. Unlike adults, who whether they were poorly catechized by "the system" or not have the faculties to truly reject the Catholic faith if they so will it, young children are impressionable and over- trusting in adults, so much they hinge of most or every word adults tell them as `truth` or knowledge.

Young children usually do not develop self-awareness or self-reasoning abilities until they start to enter puberty and carry out (poorly or not), self-independence. Which is why I am highly concerned if these Masses, or hopefully concerts only, take place next Wednesday and Friday. It is SO essential, between parents, clergy, teachers, etc. To give them the firmest foundation possible in their youths, so that they can be ready to delve deeper into their faith as adults and when challenges come their way, it is like a rock, and not like something built on sand that collapses along with them. What this Mass will do is build up an apathy/resistance in their young impressionable minds to the Catholic faith, including anything even Jesus-y related.

I'll also give one more interesting tidbit about kids: Once they get into their tweens (EDGE ages, which is Grades 6-8 or 10-14), they "wake up" so to speak in a certain sense, and those self-reasoning and self-awareness abilities kick in. That includes knowing straight up when adults are lying to them or being honest in their actions and their selves. THEY WILL NOT BE STUPID. They might be smiley and happy about what they do, but most will know you are serving them processed baloney when they really want the "organic, healthy and nutritious" meat of the Truth of the Catholic Faith. If they see Fr. is not serious about his role as an alter Christus, their parents don`t care about the faith, and their teachers don`t either, in actions like this `Mass`, they will think that Mass is a joke, It`s not obligatory or even that it is the re-presentation of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our Lord, and worse, they`ll leave the Catholic Faith faster than I can type a corny yoga joke on my keyboard. Really though, I`m being serious here.

And worse, the spiritual damage that New Age Practices can do can really wreak havoc on one`s life, and those around you:

E.g. of Spiritual and Psychological Damage in the Form of an MTV Celebrity: Spencer Pratt (and his wife, Heidi Montag)
Take the example of former MTV celebrity, Spencer Pratt, from the self-absorbed and materialistic MTV production, ``The Hills`` (as in Beverly Hills, California). The ``reality`` show followed the lives of four main protagonists/antagonists/frenemies ... four privileged women living out "dream jobs" and posh lifestyles in Beverly Hills, with a cast of supporting characters (and enemies).

One supporting "character"/actor was Spencer Pratt, a blond young guy in his twenties, who ended up being the boyfriend and now legal husband of the main character, Heidi Montag. He was entertaining as a ``bad guy``, but unfortunately, as he delved further into being famous, he succumbed to New Age Spiritual practices, particularly in the form of "healing crystals". This aspect of the show was NOT scripted. As he got further into the practice and his fame, he became quite outrageous in behaviour (`famously emphasized in his `I want Heidi to myself!`` quote) and even his appearance. Seriously, here's some pictures back of him in 2010 during the height of his crystal worship:

Spencer Pratt: Poster Child for New Age Spirituality, complete with healing crystals, other deity or physical object worship stance, Tye Dye Shirt, and "Enlightened" Facial Expressions. You can be just like him! Be in tune with the harmonizing energies of crystals ...."

His life fell apart and he did irreparable harm to those important to him in his life. He pushed his own sister (Stephanie Pratt) out of his life and only acknowledges her as a blood relative, seen in the famous "un-friending" scene. With only the empty values of society and his crystals by his side, he was unsupportive to Heidi and allowed her to undergo multiple plastic surgeries when Heidi was clearly a physically, beautiful woman, even before all that. He essentially forced his wife to end, unjustly, the strong friendship that Heidi shared with the show's main protagonist, Lauren Conrad. Further, he spent a ridiculous amount of money on those crystals, over $500,000 on them! Combined with ludicrous spending that the celebrity society encourages, he and Heidi were in serious financial troubles post-Hills!

While he did try to sell off the crystals, and/or got rid of them, one can clearly see that this "poster boy" for the New Age Spirituality clearly went off his rocker with the whole thing. To this day, he and Heidi still try to engage in whatever the reality TV world offers them, having no other bearing to guide their life other than the principles of the secular world and left behind tatters of New Age Spirituality.

Had Spencer's life been deeply centered in the Catholic Faith under Christ, he would have likely not gone off the deep end. Further, he would have valued the friendship his wife had with Lauren, he would have valued his wife more and tried to help her see that she is not just a token physical object, but in union with her a reflection of the Trinity and a reflection of Christ and his Bride, the Church. Why, he might have even chosen a more noble path in life, had he been deeply rooted in his Faith, having been led by our Lord to his true vocation and lifelong dedication. Being part of the celebrity culture is bad enough, but New Age Spirituality make him go off the deep end, and clearly this individual is in dire need of prayers, as well as those whom are in his life.

How does Spencer connect to all this? This is what can happen to the children, should they experience and be exposed to this. Sadly, most people don't understand the harm it can do to your Faith, yourself, and those around you.

However, one question remains, Why?

My Take on the Archdiocese's Role in all This ... And an interesting revelation.

This is kind of a hard one to say who's right and wrong in this. I'll get to the critical point first.

Like all workplaces, institutions, etc. There will always be a few bad eggs in the mix. There are all kinds of examples out there of people who in office truly have liberal or self-absorbed agendas, or are negative Nancies who seek the job for power/money purposes/pride and love to take down others with them. Furthermore, yes, the media is indicating the "wrongs" rather than the "rights" of clergy in action, and yes, some of them have committed liturgical and even sexual crimes worthy of excomunnication.

While it is possible there might be someone in an office, institution, etc. like this, the majority of the time, the general body of workers in a workplace, including management, is NOT so. I, Julian Barkin, of Servimus Unum Deum, have never known or met an Archdiocesan Official who I can clearly say with a big fat finger, is of this nefarious type, so portrayed in right-wing Catholic blogs (e.g. Rorate Caeli) and intentionally posted this event to cause direct spiritual harm to the flock of the Archdiocese under ++Collins' pastoral care.

Unless hard evidence is submitted about the clergy and/or the liturgical team of the parish that proves/disproves culpability of their administration or actions in all this, I will state for now, that it is unclear who was responsible for this and why. I have no affiliation with the parish or the clergy/community there and therefore it cannot be determined whom is responsible for this.

Furthermore, I found an interesting revelation on all this. The "school" mentioned in the News page may not likely be Holy Name elementary school. In fact this is what the Church's website's bulletin says for the concert :

"Concert-April 3 & 5 Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts Music Department will present Missa Gaia at Holy Name Church Wednesday April 3 and Friday April 5  at 7 p.m. This concert will feature the combined choirs and select band/string performers of CCAA in an eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary and nature sounds all directed to praise Jesus Christ as Lord of all creation.  General Admission $15" Interestingly enough, they do not list ``new age`` here at all. However, if one will look in that document above from the Vatican, Gaia Worship IS in fact specifically addressed in the document. Also, thanks to another blog, So Con or Bust, I found the poster for this ``Earth Mass``

Missa Gaia (1-5) WEB.jpg
[ So um, like , God/Gaia is like, a huge whale man, and like, heaven is, like, one big ocean of choice waves man ...]

So I guess the bigger question, is then, is this really a Mass then, or is this an actual concert with a poorly done, New Age, Gaia-worshipping composition? Because if it is a concert and not a Mass, it`s still a really poor decision to expose the young students who are Catholic of Cardinal Carter, the parishioners both old and especially young, to New Age Spirituality, even through this concert. If CC, like the Masses of the Baroque and Classical eras of Music, is the orchestra accompanying the organ to provide music for the Masses, with the dancers acting in "liturgical dance," and real Masses will take place alongside CC's orchestra, then clearly it was absolutely right to alert the diocese. Furthermore, who submitted the advertisement for the Mass, and worded it in that manner, differently from the Archdiocesan page? Was it someone on behalf of Holy Name? From Cardinal Carter academy? Was it someone in the Archdiocese? Clearly someone twisted this advertisement from its listed form on the Church bulletin/webpage to the form that was on the Archdiocesan events page

When these events happen, unintentionally, or good-minded people, usually do not have the knowledge or skills necessary to handle an issue or protocols in place. In addition, there will be slip-ups and things not foreseen or passed by/ignored in these places. That or somewhere along the process from idea to completion, something is overlooked, or ignored, assumed to be fine, and so, it could become that one piece of the Jenga(TM) puzzle that results in the tower toppling over.

Furthermore, the people working in this office are human, and do we know what happened that day in the office of Communications, or the Web office? Maybe the hypothetical, combined 2-person team of the Auxillary bishop in charge and the communications/web person who is a young graduate student doing his/her doctorate in Divinity at St. Augustine's, were overloaded with work in the Conclave absence of ++Collins, and on top of clerical duties and the young graduate's school stresses, the website work had to get done.

That, or maybe one, or both the team members, didn't even know what New Age Spirituality/Liberal Theology is and just saw it as a Mass with kids/a concert, not knowing better. And thus it was passed. I would not be surprised if they did not with the crisis of catechesis in our institutional Church today, combined with the fact that general society loves doing things like Yoga, and that even certain retreats in Catholic spaces/retreat centers use New Age practices like Reiki and Ennagrams. They likely don't know it's not OK in the life of the Church, and just assume it is, without the proper knowledge from the CCC and the Vatican document mentioned earlier.

Clearly, some investigation should be done or something said, as to why this was passed under the noses of the Archdiocesan Office, and better protocols for the News and Events page should be established to the mistake never happens again. That's what Hospitals, businesses, etc. do. I believe the term for that in institutional lingo is "Quality Assessment and Improvement."

Regardless, I state, in my honest opinion, that it is highly likely this was an unintentional mistake, not caught until likely the faithful of the diocese alerted the office on the matter. The Archdiocese
has at least started the proper process of rectifying the issue by removing it from their webpage, and I do not sense that there was any malicious attempt to harm the spiritual constitution of the faithful in this diocese.

And this, everyone, shows just how vital your role in the life of the Church is! Even Bishop Fulton Sheen said once in a famous quote that it is the lay people who will help to govern the institutional Church's affairs and keep it in order. Because of your actions, you helped bring this to the attention of the diocese. At least on line, they have listened.

I must ask of you, to assist the Archdiocese of Toronto under the governance of ++Collins, in their efforts to pastorally care for you, to HELP THEM. They are a human institutional body interwoven into the life of the Church, of whom Cardinal Collins is in charge of, to care for your spiritual and pastoral needs. However, our archdiocese is big, with over 250 parishes operating in it! That means many priests, seminarians, and laypeople! Can an office of maybe under 100 people working for it, ensure the spiritual integrity of your personal salvation and the pastoral life of the archdiocese all on its own? NO! Which is why you should do your best to spiritually co-operate with the office on affairs like this. When there is something spiritually detrimental in the archdiocese needing attention, please help the staff there and communicate with them in an effective, Catholic, charitable manner! They need your help, and they need to know what's going on. If you choose to concentrate on bashing them and not communicate with them, how will they know when there's a crisis or spiritual decay going on? Which is also why it must be more than a few people. It must be you, me, your friends, family. We have to Evangelize, Catechise, and then help those tools, institutions, etc. in the Church already in place.

And that is my take on this matter. Pax Tibi Christi, Julian Barkin of Servimus Unum Deum.

The New Pope: Pope Francis (birth name: Jorge Mario Bergoglio)

Hello Everyone.

So the blogs and news pundits are going crazy. And the cardinals including our very own Thomas Cardinal Collins played a role in electing him. He is Pope Francis I, given birth name Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The announcement here has been made:

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum:
Habemus Papam!
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum,
Dominum, Georgium
Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem, Bergoglio
qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum.

(“I announce to you a great joy:
We have a Pope!
The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord,
Lord Jorge,
Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, Bergoglio,
who takes to himself the name Francis.”)

Personally speaking, I was initially disappointed. I wanted one of my home grown cardinals (Oulette or Collins) to ascend the throne, or Burke or Arinze for being knows as ardent supporters of traditional Catholicism/The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Would have been fun to see my diocesan archbishop Collins become Pope.

So, who are we exactly dealing with here? Here's a brief biography article from the Vatican's News outlet, news.va:
http://www.news.va/en/news/who-is-pope-francis

What has he got going against him of concern for us Catholics?
- He is of the Jesuit Order, which was once known for being the pope's "shock troops," now is known for being the butt of conservative Church jokes for being liberals and straying from the foundations and ideals of their order and founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola

- According to the more strict or "radical" traditional people who hang around places like Rorate Caeli, "Summorum Pontificum has been "nonexistent" in Buenos Aires, and he is sympathetic to the charismatic movement." This one did NOT come from me, see here: http://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2013/03/habemus-papam.html#disqus_thread

- The big point: I have been able to find NOTHING concrete as to how he will be with regards to the Latin Mass. He will likely not "kill" Summorum Pontificum, but I don't see him promoting the Latin Mass or helping it further .... at this point in time. And time we have to give him.

  • UPDATE: 5:02 PM, just a minute or two after releasing this post: This is bad .... I just found this on my blog feed ... http://supertradmum-etheldredasplace.blogspot.ca/2013/03/rorate-comments-two.html. However, 1) this comment is anonymous. 2) it's from Rorate Caeli, where "rad-trads' like to comment and hang out. 3) Well he's now in the papacy/Rome. Like Muller, once you are in the hot seat/Curia, it can "make you tow the party line" so to speak. Treat this comment with a grain of salt, but it looks like we'll need to watch him closely ...

What has he got going for him?
- As I was watching the CNN news coverage, they mentioned with regard to his status as a Jesuit, thanks to John Allen Jr. of the National Catholic Fishwrap (which is truly NOT supposed to use the name Catholic):

  • They take a 4th vow besides poverty, which is obedience to the Pope. (curious question: So, em what do you do when you are the pope as a Jesuit?)
  • CNN did note there's radical Jesuits (I know of this personally to an extent via Lonergan Theology, and CNN underestimated the extent this liberal radicalism has penetrated the order), but this pope resisted being part of that faction.
- On the hard line issues of abortion, euthanasia, and same-sex marriage in, at the time, in Buenos Aires, he was noted for being AGAINST these moral evils and gave "trouble" when the government accepted or supported those immoral evils.

- Financially speaking, he stood firm with insistence for the fundamental option for the poor, during an economic collapse in the 1980's.

- The media has been noting this a lot, even pre-election when he was a papabile: He doesn’t have a chauffeur and preferred to use the metro to get around Buenos Aires. In Rome he prefers to get around on foot or use public transport. See he's eco-friendly too! lol!

- He seems quite anti-Curia/getting chummy with the higher-ups: "He is unusual in that he has always rejected posts in the Roman Curia and only visited the Vatican when it was absolutely necessary. One thing he hates to see in the clergy is “spiritual wordliness”: ecclesiastical careerism disguised as clerical refinement."

So, well what can I say ... Overall, at least we won't see the boat rocked in favour of liberal whims and the secular media and world. However, we can't tell at this point whether he will simply keep the Papal seat warm, has a few curve balls ready to be thrown at us like Benedict, or other things .... Pray for our new Holy Father Francis I, and let us pray he will triumph.

Pax, Julian.

P.S. My mom talked to me about how St. Francis was asked to "rebuild My Church" in a vision from Jesus. St. Francis took it physically at first, but then realized Jesus meant symbolically/spiritually. Could this be a sign that things will further turn around in the Church with him at the helm???

BREAKING NEWS! HABEMUS PAPAM

As of 210pm EST ... THIS HAPPENED!!!!!!

WOOOOO!!!

BTW, an interesting note. The CNN, of course, interviews a group of youngish/adult women who are pro-feminism right after the smoke erupts. One of the women commented that because the voting was short (as in not spanning over days), she feels that they have likely elected a traditionalist pope.

Hmmmmm .... That and that seagull was flying around the chimney .... guess even God has updated his messengers for modern times.

Pax Tibi Christi ..... Awaiting the new pope to come out, Julian Barkin of S.U.D.

March 11 2013: Highlights and Personal Points

Hello Everyone. Just some short updates:

1) I got a good article from the Catholic Chapter House blog with the site. It asks "Where have all the Men Gone?" I don't know, but it sure is calling out one of the elephants in the nave of the Church. I also clicked on a link in the article, and good news for us men, seems that the Latin Mass is for us! Why? Well why don't you read it here?: http://catholicprodigaldaughter.blogspot.ca/2009/03/traditional-latin-mass-men-and.html

2) I have been starting to work on my next two Latin Mass posts: Part 5 of the piece-by-piece analysis of each part of the Latin Mass and their relevance, and the Serving Roles of the Cross-Bearer and the Boat Bearer in the Latin Mass. Give me about 2-3 weeks, as I am back to work and getting a couple or few days off each week.

3) I went on an awesome retreat with the folks at the Newman Centre at the University of Toronto this weekend! The focus of the talks was on John Paul II's Theology of the Body. While it may be a post-Vatican II work, it should not be overlooked in our current culture that shuns marriage and encourages a laissez-faire approach to sex. In addition, Mass (Novus Ordo of course) was held both the Saturday and Sunday, and we had a powerful encounter with the Lord in a 3-hour Eucharistic benediction and adoration. Aside from the religious components, it was great to be with my fellow Newman friends, and I even made some new ones, including finding another kind soul who enjoys the Latin Mass and shares similar practice of the faith with me with joy! Please continue to support the Newman Center in Toronto with donations, Mass and special event attendance, and with verbal and written support. I might want to explore my weekend a little further in a post when I have time .... we'll see.

SEDE VACANS

Just a few hours ago, as of 2pm NYT/EST, The Throne of Peter was made Vacant. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has now completed his reign in the Papacy as the Bishop of Rome. Now, solely, once again, he is but a humble worker in the Lord's vineyard, Cardinal Josef Ratzinger.

But let us never forget his legacy: His writings, his governance, his continuation of the cleaning up of the institutional Church bureaucracy, and for us Latin Mass goers, Summorum Pontificum and Ecclesiae Unitatem. Also, he is still with us for the time being.

May Christ bless you for the rest of your life, Cardinal, for your service to us, and to the Lord. Further, by the will of the Holy Spirit, the Mover of movers, may people continue to be brought to eternal salvation via the works of Josef Ratzinger, our now retired Pope.

Holy Spirit, please bring forth unto us, the Pope that we need to continue on the same or an even grater path, as did Pope Benedict XVI.  Amen.

Pax Tibi Christ, Julian.

The Final Major Solemnity/Feast Day Homily of Pope Benedict XVI: Let us Avoid the Sins Against the Unity of the Church, Overcoming Individualism and Rivalry

Hello Everyone,

Today is the last major homily of the Pontificate of our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, during a Mass on a major feast day/solemnity in the Novus Ordo liturgical calendar. Posted below is the speech translated from the Italian from the Vatican Website, thanks to Rorate Caeli here: http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-final-homily-let-us-avoid-sins.html. Eventually an English translation of better quality will be on the Vatican's site.

I have also taken the liberty to highlight some important points from the homily in bold, with major ones highlighted in yellow, which are relevant considering the division and happenings that exist in the Church and the world, not excluding the Latin Mass Catholics of the Extraordinary Form (e.g. amongst each other, vs. Novus Ordo Catholics, or others in their lives).

Pax, Julian.

Venerable Brothers,Dear Brothers and Sisters!

Today, Ash Wednesday, we begin a new Lenten journey, a journey that extends over forty days and leads us towards the joy of Easter, to victory of Life over death. Following the ancient Roman tradition of Lenten stations, we are gathered for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The tradition says that the first statio took place in the Basilica of Saint Sabina on the Aventine Hill. Circumstances suggested we gather in St. Peter's Basilica. Tonight there are many of us gathered around the tomb of the Apostle Peter, to also ask him to pray for the path of the Church going forward at this particular moment in time, to renew our faith in the Supreme Pastor, Christ the Lord. For me it is also a good opportunity to thank everyone, especially the faithful of the Diocese of Rome, as I prepare to conclude the Petrine ministry, and I ask you for a special remembrance in your prayer.

The readings that have just been proclaimed offer us ideas which, by the grace of God, we are called to transform into a concrete attitude and behaviour during Lent. First of all the Church proposes the powerful appeal which the prophet Joel addresses to the people of Israel, "Thus says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning" (2.12). Please note the phrase "with all your heart," which means from the very core of our thoughts and feelings, from the roots of our decisions, choices and actions, with a gesture of total and radical freedom. But is this return to God possible? Yes, because there is a force that does not reside in our hearts, but that emanates from the heart of God and the power of His mercy. The prophet says: "return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment" (v. 13). It is possible to return to the Lord, it is a 'grace', because it is the work of God and the fruit of faith that we entrust to His mercy. But this return to God becomes a reality in our lives only when the grace of God penetrates and moves our innermost core, gifting us the power that "rends the heart". Once again the prophet proclaims these words from God: "Rend your hearts and not your garments" (v. 13). Today, in fact, many are ready to "rend their garments" over scandals and injustices – which are of course caused by others - but few seem willing to act according to their own "heart", their own conscience and their own intentions, by allowing the Lord transform, renew and convert them.

This "return to me with all your heart," then, is a reminder that not only involves the individual but the entire community. Again we heard in the first reading: "Blow the horn in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly! Gather the people, sanctify the congregation; Assemble the elderly; gather the children, even infants nursing at the breast; Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her bridal tent (vv.15-16). The community dimension is an essential element in faith and Christian life. Christ came "to gather the children of God who are scattered into one" (Jn 11:52). The "we" of the Church is the community in which Jesus brings us together (cf. Jn 12:32), faith is necessarily ecclesial. And it is important to remember and to live this during Lent: each person must be aware that the penitential journey cannot be faced alone, but together with many brothers and sisters in the Church.

Finally, the prophet focuses on the prayers of priests, who, with tears in their eyes, turn to God, saying: " Between the porch and the altar let the priests weep, let the ministers of the LORD weep and say: “Spare your people, Lord! Do not let your heritage become a disgrace, a byword among the nations! Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’"(V.17). This prayer leads us to reflect on the importance of witnessing to faith and Christian life, for each of us and our community, so that we can reveal the face of the Church and how this face is, at times, disfigured. I am thinking in particular of the sins against the unity of the Church, of the divisions in the body of the Church. Living Lent in a more intense and evident ecclesial communion, overcoming individualism and rivalry is a humble and precious sign for those who have distanced themselves from the faith or who are indifferent.

"Well, now is the favourable time, this is the day of salvation" (2 Cor 6:2). The words of the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Corinth resonate for us with an urgency that does not permit absences or inertia. The term "now" is repeated and can not be missed, it is offered to us as a unique opportunity. And the Apostle's gaze focuses on sharing with which Christ chose to characterize his life, taking on everything human to the point of taking on all of man’s sins. The words of St. Paul are very strong: "God made him sin for our sake." Jesus, the innocent, the Holy One, "He who knew no sin" (2 Cor 5:21), bears the burden of sin sharing the outcome of death, and death of the Cross with humanity. The reconciliation we are offered came at a very high price, that of the Cross raised on Golgotha, on which the Son of God made man was hung. In this, in God’s immersion in human suffering and the abyss of evil, is the root of our justification. The "return to God with all your heart" in our Lenten journey passes through the Cross, in following Christ on the road to Calvary, to the total gift of self. It is a journey on which each and every day we learn to leave behind our selfishness and our being closed in on ourselves, to make room for God who opens and transforms our hearts. And as St. Paul reminds us, the proclamation of the Cross resonates within us thanks to the preaching of the Word, of which the Apostle himself is an ambassador. It is a call to us so that this Lenten journey be characterized by a more careful and assiduous listening to the Word of God, the light that illuminates our steps.

In the Gospel passage according of Matthew, to whom belongs to the so-called Sermon on the Mount, Jesus refers to three fundamental practices required by the Mosaic Law: almsgiving, prayer and fasting. These are also traditional indications on the Lenten journey to respond to the invitation to «return to God with all your heart." But he points out that both the quality and the truth of our relationship with God is what qualifies the authenticity of every religious act. For this reason he denounces religious hypocrisy, a behaviour that seeks applause and approval. The true disciple does not serve himself or the "public", but his Lord, in simplicity and generosity: "And your Father who sees everything in secret will reward you" (Mt 6,4.6.18). Our fitness will always be more effective the less we seek our own glory and the more we are aware that the reward of the righteous is God Himself, to be united to Him, here, on a journey of faith, and at the end of life, in the peace light of coming face to face with Him forever (cf. 1 Cor 13:12).

Dear brothers and sisters, we begin our Lenten journey with trust and joy. May the invitation to conversion , to "return to God with all our heart", resonate strongly in us, accepting His grace that makes us new men and women, with the surprising news that is participating in the very life of Jesus. May none of us, therefore, be deaf to this appeal, also addressed in the austere rite, so simple and yet so beautiful, of the imposition of ashes, which we will shortly carry out. May the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church and model of every true disciple of the Lord accompany us in this time.

Amen!

Benedict XVI
