REPOST: Information for the Feast of the Epiphany Jan 6 in the EF Calendar (2nd Sunday after New Years in O.F.)

REPOSTED FROM Jan 6, 2013 (http://torontotlmserving.blogspot.ca/2013/01/blessed-chalk-facts-about-feast-of.html) with slight changes for this year of 2017:

FYI .... Missa Canata/Sung High Mass for Epiphany @ 0930h/am tomorrow, Jan 6, 2017, with blessing of Epiphany Holy Water in the EF at 0915h/am in Mississauga (Toronto proper), at Carmel Heights Retirement Home chapel. Celebrant is veteran priest to the EF Mass in Toronto, Fr. Russell Asch.

Hello Everyone,

I decided for this Sunday's liturgical feast, that of the Epiphany, because both the Ordinary and the Extraordiary Forms' calendars are in rare sync, and there are some fun and family-freindy Traditional Catholic practices associated with this feast day (that in my opinion SHOULD be resurrected by Catholic families everywhere), I bring to you some information on this feast day, including the traditions herein in the Church.

The information I bring to you, comes from a word document I created for myself that is for my info, but also for my future children someday to teach them about major liturgical calendar days of the year. Here I share with you one portion: That of the Feast of the Epiphany:

Feast of the Epiphany

When? – Usually January 6 in both forms, however in the Novus Ordo it is usually moved to the Sunday near it after Christmas.

What? – From Crossroads Initiative of Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio: “The Solemn feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, traditionally occurs on January 6 following the twelve days of Christmas.  Epiphany commemorates three scriptural events: the visit of the Magi to the stable of Bethlehem following the nativity of Jesus, Christ's Baptism in the Jordan, and his first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana.  This Epiphany article focuses on the significance of the Magi or three wise men who follow the star in search of the King of kings.”

Also from Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of the Diocese of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada: “The Epiphany celebrates the peoples of the world coming to know God's Son as their Saviour. In the words of Ephesians concerning Jesus' death and resurrection, thereby 'the Gentiles have become fellow heirs [with believing Jews], members of the same body [the Church, Christ's Body], and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel'.”

From the 1962 Baronius Press Missal:
“The word “epiphany” means “manifestation.” The Church in the Mass, commemorates a triple manifestation of Christ: to the Magi, that is, to the Gentiles; in His Baptism, when the Voice from "Heaven declared: “This is My Beloved Son”; and in the miracle of changing the water into wine at Cana.”

Summorum Pontificum Edition. Baronius Press: London. 2009. p.237.

Notes:
1. It is this part of the season of Advent liturgically where we are introduced to the “Wise Men/Kings” in the readings. People think the wise men are associated with Christmas. They are in the SEASON of Advent or more traditionally known as the Octave of Christmas, but not Christmas (the Feast of the Nativity) itself.

2. This is a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION according to the Catechism. In other parts of the world this feast day might be transferred to the previous Sunday before the 6th. Regardless, the Catholic obligation to Mass must be obeyed, Sunday or not:

The Sunday Eucharist
2177 The Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life. “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.”110
“Also to be observed are the day of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension of Christ, the feast of the Body and Blood of Christi, the feast of Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, the feast of Saint Joseph, the feast of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul, and the feast of All Saints.”111

TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC EPIPHANY TRADITION FOR FAMILY

Blessed Chalk Writing with Epiphany Holy Water blessing - http://www.churchyear.net/epiphany.html -

"Various customs have developed around Epiphany. In the East, there is a solemn blessing of water. In the West, in the Middle Ages, houses were blessed on Epiphany. Holy water was sprinkled in each room. The whole family was involved. The father led the procession with a shovel of charcoal on which he burned incense and the oldest son had the bowl of holy water. The rest of the family followed along saying the rosary and/or singing hymns. While the father and oldest son were incensing and blessing the house, the youngest child carried a plate of chalk. The chalk had been blessed with a special blessing after morning Mass. The father took the blessed chalk and wrote over every room that led outside: 20 + C + M + B + 08 which stands for "Anno Domini 2008 -- Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar" and means "The three Holy Kings, Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar, in the year of Our Lord, 2008" or whatever the year may be. The letters C, M, and B are also thought to stand for Christus mansionem benedicat, meaning "Christ bless this home." This tradition of blessing the doorways symbolizes the family's commitment to welcome Christ into their homes on a daily basis through the year."

So guess what? It's not just a "Middle Ages" tradition to be left back in the 1400's, you can do this beautiful family tradition as well! My [former] serving ally Robin provided this photo on our Latin Mass associated facebook group so I hope he does not mind me posting this here. Here is the picture with instructions as to what the priest or the head of the household (Father usually speaking) is to do with the blessed chalk and Epiphany holy water, though note one correction: The number at the end should be 13 17 to mark the year as 2013 2017:

Now you may be asking what to do about how to get that chalk blessed? Well, Domincan Priest Dom Mark Kirby  at Vultus Christi - http://vultus.stblogs.org/2013/01/epiphany-blessing-of-chalk-and.html - Provides us with the appropriate prayer in English that a priest should use to bless the chalk:

Blessing of Chalk
V. Our help is the name of the Lord.
R. Who made heaven and earth.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Bless, O Lord God, this creature chalk
to render it helpful to Thy people.
Grant that they who use it in faith
and with it inscribe upon the doors of their homes
the names of Thy saints, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar,
may through their merits and intercession
enjoy health of body and protection of soul.
Through Christ our Lord.
And the chalk is sprinkled with Holy Water.

Do note there are the special prayers/blessings in Latin that your EF priest/parish will use from the Rituale Romanum 1962 (see the link below), and for sure you can count on those blessings! So do to try to go to an EF priest/parish for those items (Epiphany Holy Water and the Chalk) if possible. However, do not hesitate if all you can get is Novus Ordo chalk/holy water and blessings from Novus Ordo priests.

By the way, a note on the Epiphany Holy Water. This is likely difficult to obtain and you may have to settle for regular holy water. This special type of Holy Water needs to be blessed the eve before the Epiphany and has its own special blessing/prayers. See here - http://www.sanctamissa.org/en/resources/books-1962/rituale-romanum/48-blessings-for-special-days-and-feasts.html

Regardless, have fun and make this a Catholic Tradition your family will uphold every year. If Christ blesses me with marriage and a family, I will certainly want to do this. Pax, Julian.

More from St. Lawrence the Martyr Extraordinary Form Eucharistic Adoration

Hello Everyone,

If you recall months back, St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Scarborough decided to add a weekly Eucharistic Adoration hour to their parish schedule.

I featured this new addition to the Extraordinary Form community in this posting back in February:
http://torontotlmserving.blogspot.ca/2013/02/extraordinary-form-eucharistic.html. However, to jot your memory ...

The weekly Eucharistic Adoration for St. Lawrence the Martyr, takes place on Sundays at 6pm to 7pm, before the Novus Ordo evening Mass. The benediction and adoration is done in the Extraordinary Form (in Latin) by the residing Latin Mass Chaplain, Fr. Steven Szakaczki.

The primary server for this weekly adoration, mentioned frequently here, Robin Cheung, has posted  videos taken by a parishioner of the Adoration on his YouTube(tm) channel.

The first portion with Benediction taken in the last portion of Adoration and Benediction, is here. Everyone is singing "Tantum Ergo Sacramentum", the last two verses of Pange Lingua, traditionally sung in both Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form Eucharistic Adoration. Also, The priest gives the following response:

P: Panem de caelo praestitisti eis (Alleluia) --> "Thou hast given them bread from Heaven (alleluia.)
People: Omne delectamentum in se habentem (alleluia) --> Having all sweetness within it (alleluia.)
P: Oremus. Deus, qui nobis sub Sacramento .....

The second Video is in this link for your viewing pleasure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeslmyTV39Y. Because Robin didn't give it a unique title, Blogger cannot bring it up in a search for instant pasting into posts.

At this point in the second video, it is almost complete, with the traditional ending hymn (used both in the Novus Ordo and the Extraordinary Form,) "Holy God We Praise Thy Name". However you can tell it is Extraordinary Form as Robin bows when the Priest does, and his right hand is on his breast while carrying the thurible.

Pax, Julian.

Extraordinary Form Eucharistic Adoration at St. Lawrence Martyr Sunday Evenings

Hello Everyone,

Something relatively new has started at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish within the past few months. While this practice is not new to those who know of First Fridays, there is something new about it .....

St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Church, Scarborough, now has weekly Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction, every Sunday evening from 6 - 7pm, right before the late eve Novus Ordo English Mass. But there is more to it than just being another opportunity to be personally before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, ...

I highlight it here on S.U.D. because .... by my understanding from Robin Cheung, the adoration and benediction is done in the Extraordiary Form manner! We are talking full Latin prayers, and certainly no praise and worship guitar bands and bongos. It's straight up, just like it was before the Novus Ordo, with genuflections and/or reverences done at intervals that may be foreign to you who are used to adoration and benediction of the Novus Ordo kind. The adoration and benediction is done by the Latin Mass chaplain, Fr. Steven Szakaczki, and served by Robin Cheung, veteran EF Mass server of the parish.

So please, do try to attend this lovely, Extraordinary form of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction in our diocese when you can. You might like it all in Latin with the traditional hymns. I have also added it to the Latin Masses in the core of the diocese page on my blog for those who are looking up Mass times and the like.

In addition, if anyone is able to go to it, and get video footage of the serving portions, I will credit you on this blog and create the posting about EF adoration/benediction with it. I don't just want to rely on my books alone for that one.

Pax, Julian Barkin.

Pope Benedict Resigns from the Papacy: Some thoughts for the Future of the Church and Traditional Catholicism, and an Urgent Request

EDIT FEB 11, 2013, 1109pm

I would like to add a beautiful and solid prayer said by the chaplain of my high school alma mater, Fr. Reddy, CSB, of St. Michael's College School during this morning's prayer and reflection:

Let us pray,

Lord God, you entrusted the See of Peter to Benedict. Bless him, as he prepares to leave that sacred office. Guide the cardinals as they prepare to choose a new pope. Jesus promised to be with his Church until the end of time. May His presence bestow wisdom, holiness, and courage upon the cardinal electors. Lord, grant Pope Benedict peace, comfort, and joy, as he takes this historic step. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom, Pray for us. St. Michael, Pray for us. St. Basil, pray for us.

Pax, Julian.

END EDIT FEB 11 2013.

Hello Everyone,

Okay, so I'm WAY late to the party. Sorry but unlike the rest of the media pundits and bloggers out there, I am a part-time employee who had to do night shift at his workplace and it was a nasty night shift, which I got to do alone (again .... grrrrr ...). This means sleeping and recovering  for the duration of the normal daylight hours, so of course I missed the news and did not get to blog until now.

It is old news by now, but our Blessed and Holy Father, B16, is retiring. In over 600 years, a Pope has not ``retired`` from the Papacy, until now. For those who have been eyeing the last couple of years, Pope Benedict has hinted that he might have to retire should his overall physical health decline, and well it has come.

Here is the full text of his resignation speech:
http://washingtonexaminer.com/full-text-pope-benedict-xvis-resignation-letter/article/2521147

Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer. From the Vatican, 10 February 2013
BENEDICTUS PP XVI

It saddens me that this had to happen, but I sympathize with our physically weary and aged Holy Father. Biological ageing is but the cruel pet of death, priming us all for the eventual slice of his scythe. However, in this day and age with the increasing signs of decay and societal collapse, as well as increasing internal division and radicalism/being Judas in the Church, a new fresh body and mind are needed to keep going on the path that John Paul II and Benedict XVI have done in steering the Barque of Peter back onto the intended course. I whole heartedly support the Pope's decision to retire and to bring someone more capable to the helm of the Seat of Rome.
However, this isn't just a waiting game people ..... we should be very cautious and worried and not just trust that things are magically going to continue the way they are via trending. It's no different than politics, where anything can stem the tide of leadership, and all it takes is one stupid bungle or some political interference/manipulation and then bam! An immoral, societally damaging leader and his/her party is in the power seat and undoes all the hard work of the predecessor, economically, socially, morally, etc. I actually heard on the CTV news this evening that there is actually a week before the conclave where the cardinals meet, share meals, chat .... and well the impression I get is that this can influence politically who cardinals will vote for. The key words were "exchanging ideas" which is code for influencing other like-minded cardinals to vote for you, be it traditional or conservative. Sounds to me like political campaigning.
With the seat of Rome about to become "Sede Vacante" (or vacant), and an absolute need for a new successor  to the Seat of Rome, and hence the Vicarship of Christ, all of us should be keeping vigil or watch. While Benedict has done his absolute best to ensure that the "right men" for the job of leading the Church are placed in the cardinal-ship  not all of the cardinals will be able to lead the Church in the right way as Benedict has. Benedict himself knew that the Church was dying in number and souls were not being saved thanks to the effect that liberalism/modernism/secularism had on Catholics, especially the clergy and institutional body of the Church who have foolishly embraced this with gusto since the mis-application of Vatican II. Sadly, this has been most evident in the Catholic liturgy, which while when done with valid form, matter, and intent by a validly and licitly ordained Catholic priest is SACRAMENTALLY VALID regardless of rite or form of a rite, practically hasn't been nourishing the flock as it should, and everything surrounding it too (e.g. personal anecdotes and weak or absent messages in homilies, stupid props including animals and costumes in the liturgy, watered-down "jesus loves everybody" catechesis of kids and adults, denial of central tenets and doctrine/dogma/beliefs of the faith, "cafeteria" Catholcism...")
While John Paul II started to bring the overall institutional mindset of the Church back on course, B16 went even more further and bolder than his predeccesor, while still remaining an ``intellectual pope`` as some media sources say when comparing him to JPII. He set about and carried out a number of significant things:
  • Promulgating the Motu Proprio, Summorum Pontificum with the instruction Ecclesiae Unitatem to restore proper and solid Masses in the Latin Rite (the world`s majority rite) not only to correct presumptions, but to hopefully influence Novus Ordo clergy to make their Masses more orthodox and back to where they should be, and as a peace offering to the (likely now impossible) reconciliation with the SSPX
  • Tried to get the SSPX to reconcile with the Church and become canonically valid via freeing the Latin Mass, removing the excommunications of its bishops, and having the doctrinal talks for two years, of which the SSPX has been obstinate in their position and refused to submit to the will of the Lord including his holy bride, the Church, via Rome.
  • Promulgating Anglicanorum Coebitus so that Anglicans who are disaffected by what`s going on in their `church` who desire to keep their liturgical traditions and culture, but at the same time want to be in Communion with the Church, had a bridge in order to do so.
  • Created a number of excellent and orthodox spiritual works, pre-Papacy and also during his papacy, including the famous Jesus of Nazareth Series and his encyclicals which have been cherised as a whole by Catholics in the Church.
  • Stood firm against many different attacking forces in the church including: Secularism, relativism, atrocities in other countries, the sex scandal crisis part II (initial blow-out in 2002 with JPII), and especially wayward liberal clergy, religious, etc. He certainly fought to curb their ways and influence, especially within the institutional Church.
It is with these poignant marks he leaves the Church on a great high note. But after him ... well I don`t know what will happen. And that is the problem. Our next Pope will not likely be a pope who bridged the gap, between pre and post Vatican II changes, and is likely a pure Novus Ordo Mass Pope (though they may have awareness of the Extraordinary Form, has likely never attended one or were too young to appreciate it), Vatican II educated, etc. We hope that their studies, combined with the Holy Father's teachings and statements on Vatican II, have influenced their perspective on the Church, but do we know every cardinal's stance and education? No. Furthermore, not every single cardinal present in the Conclave will likely have the gusto or the traditionalism our Pope had. Should the wrong man be elected to the papacy, I fear:
  • That the significant progress that has been made with regard to Christian Unity as well as dealing with other groups of Christians/Catholics will either be bungled or halted. Worse, he may promote false ecumenism or improperly understood ecumenism which also is known as syncretism, that all faiths are equal.
  • That the Pope will be liberal and espouse Vatican II to that of a super dogma, ignoring how B16 AND Paul VI called it a pastoral council with no new dogma/doctrine pronounced. In this vein, there will be no correction of errors that were committed by the liberals in the institutional church, nor overall correction back to what is supposed to be interpretation of the Council in continuity with tradition as Benedict has stated numerous times.
  • That the situation with the Society of St. Pius X will he handled inappropriately or just not bothered with at all. Personally as opinion, the way they are going now, I hope they do not come back into the Church without severe monitoring and discipline and a total remission of their acts with submission to the doctrinal preamble and the Holy Father. However should this situation be handled poorly, I can see EF-attending Catholic souls being lost to the Society and/or going into ``angry-trad" mode and making us good trads look bad (and they may possibly become spiritually damned from frequent attendance of their "Masses," of which schism is an automatic self-excommunication act), or the Society being let in unchecked into the Church and actually causing more strife and division for Traditional Catholics everywhere. The next pope might also be more of the Muller hard-ball mindset (which I think it 100% needed with them), but being the Pope ... I wouldn't be surprised if the entire society were excommunicated and full schismatic status to be passed on them.
  • That the next Pope will have a deterrence to the Latin Mass, and either "ghettoize" it as a whole leaving it to just fetter off itself (which is actually not happening, it`s growing as well as the number of us young Catholics attending it,) and not supporting it, or hating it and giving it negative press which lukewarm and/or uneducated Catholics/clergy will take as a sign to hate the Latin Mass more.
  • That those forces, be they secular, or liberally-minded internally in the Church, will truly run the show on the practical level and the Pope will be but the mere "stand-in figure." As an analogy, it will be like in Canada, where the Lieutenant Govenor of Canada is the Queens Representative (of which the Queen truly has governance over Canada) but the Prime minister actually runs the show and practically governs in Canada
So everyone, I'll admit you probably think I am paranoid, but really one should seriously consider that the Church needs a strong warrior as pope, not so much an intellectual, but one who needs to clean up the institutional aspects further and follow in the footsteps of B16 and everything he's done. He needs to be courageous against those who are not truly vested in carrying out the Gospel in the Church and just being Judases amongst us, and further needs to stand up against those forces attacking us Catholics right now (e.g. radical homosexuals and supporters, Church-haters, pro-choicers, radical Islamic states who persecute our Christian brethen in the Middle East, etc.)

Therefore everyone, I ask one big thing right now.

I am asking you, to pray hard! Extremely hard

that Our Lord, Jesus Christ, will bestow the

Catholic Church with a successor who will truly

proclaim the Gospel of our Lord, and be not afraid

to do as Paul advised the young bishop, Timothy, to

"Fight the good fight of the Faith" in light of the

evils of  the world, the flesh, and the Devil, who

seek our physical and eternal ruin in the afterlife.

I will leave off this request with a positive note. As a whole since the JPII/B16 generation of Catholics have come to the forefront and the 60`s-80`s generation of Catholics are dying off, I am seeing overall good fruits and works in the Church. More teachers and catechists and even just ordinary Catholics are doing their best with what they got to proclaim the Gospel, and to do it evangelically. They are trying to fight off the indifferent-ism and false Catholicism of the generations before, and gradually reversing the trends that have weakened the faith in the Church. The younger clergy and laity are waking up and are getting back to the basics as it were. And even some of the older priests, clergy, etc. in the Church are seeing that they have to buckle down in order than my generation does not dwindle away entirely. It is slow, but the message is getting out there. It might be too late to save everyone, but at least things are turning around. In my opinion, it`s very unlikely a hard line, extroverted Liberal will take control of the papacy, rather if anything, the worst we`ll get is a lukewarm pope. However, the Church needs better in these days, and we will more likely get someone of that nature in the Papal Chair, at least equal to that of Benedict on the big stuff, or even better

So please pray for a new successor who can carry on as B16 has, but even more courageous and willing to fight for us, and allow the Latin Mass to continue thriving in the liturgical, and even the societal, moral, and cultural life of the Church.

Pax Tibi Christ, Julian.

Off the Beaten Path: CCCB statement of the Society of St. Pius X (Updated Jan 28 2013)

Hello everyone,

I Julian, sole author of Servimus Unum Deum, must take an urgent break from doing the serving portions of my blog to touch on an issue that has struck a nerve with me as a young EF-partaking Catholic. You young people should especially listen up.

If some of you have noticed, in certain places I have stressed here on Servimus Uunum Deum, that we should support the extraordinary form via VALID AND LICIT DIOCESAN Latin Masses. I say so because these masses and their clergy involved are those with true and proper faculties who are under the Magisterium and specifically, the diocesan ordinary, +Collins, as dictated by canon law. Canon Law is the acting divine and practical law, that is part of the Magisterial and binding authority of the Church. We the laity are even bound to it in certain parts (e.g. Mass obligation, sins that incur automatic excommunication).

Any priest, acting outside of the authority of their diocesan ordinary, has NO faculties (save maybe consecration and emergency confession in danger of death). This includes excommunicated, illicit, or invalid priests.
The bishop is responsible for faculties of priests to validly and licitly carry our the Sacraments of Jesus Christ. This is stated in Canon Law. First off:

"Can. 838 §1. The direction of the sacred liturgy depends solely on the authority of the Church which resides in the Apostolic See and, according to the norm of law, the diocesan bishop."

This extends to all sacraments, as they are performed within the Liturgy (save emergency baptism in a period of crisis/imminent death). For example, lets use the Sacrament of Reconciliation:
"Can. 966 §1. The valid absolution of sins requires that the minister have, in addition to the power of orders, the faculty of exercising it for the faithful to whom he imparts absolution."

"Can. 969 §1. The local ordinary alone is competent to confer upon any presbyters whatsoever the faculty to hear the confessions of any of the faithful. Presbyters who are members of religious institutes, however, are not to use the faculty without at least the presumed permission of their superior."

Why Am I saying this? Because sadly, there are certain organizations that exist that do not operate within the authority of the Church and are canonically illegal. They may practice Catholicism and look like "true Catholicism" including using the rubrical books and liturgies of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, but are really acting in defiance of the Magisterium and our bishops and Holy Father.

The most well known and popular, especially with the resurgence of the Extraordinary form, is the Society if St Pius X. I do not want to delve into their history here as there are numerous books and blog posts flying around, (with some of them biased in their favour), except to say that since 1988 when pope JPII had to excommunicate its founder Archbishop Marcel Lefevbre and 5 other bishops (a co-consecrator and 4 newly consecrated bishops, of whom one, Fellay is the SSPX's current head), they have been obstinate in not reconciling with Rome, despite B16's heroic efforts.

Unfortunately, the organization operates in my diocese and many others around the world, and continues to attract people in the wake of our institutional (clergy, lay teachers, separate school teachers, parents ... etc. NOT the true Catholic) Church's failure to minister to its laity. Seeking solid catechesis that was never or poorly given to them, and what they feel is "true Catholicism unadulterated by the Smoke of Satan that is Vatican II," misinformed Catholics are sadly being sucked into what they provide. What really sickens me is that they offer the Latin Mass AND ``sacraments`` as well as ``theology`` and ``teaching`` but all their Masses are illicit (illegal) and while supposedly they can confect the Eucharist, ALL their other sacraments are EMPTY, NULL, and VOID facsimiles in Latin as they separate themselves from, and act without, the authority of their dioceses` bishops in rejection of their ``Novus Ordo Church``. They even have their own marriage tribunals outside of the Church! So already they deem themselves in action the "eyes of the Church" as that is who sees and does not see valid marriages.

Even the Holy Father, when he remitted the excommunications on the bishops of the Society, reaffirmed that the `ministers` in the Society have no faculties to administer anything sacramental in his 2009 letter, 3rd paragraph:

`` The fact that the Society of Saint Pius X does not possess a canonical status in the Church is not, in the end, based on disciplinary but on doctrinal reasons. As long as the Society does not have a canonical status in the Church, its ministers do not exercise legitimate ministries in the Church.``

Also in this letter, despite the removal of the excommunications of the four bishops, the bishops AND the society are still not in communion with Rome. What is even more sorrowful is that while they may have paid, and still pay lip service to the Pope regarding his divine authority, The Society and their adherents/supporters denied that the excommunications ever took place under a case of "dire emergency" in the Church, and still hold onto that false truth. The Society and their adherents/supporters have also said they are not schismatic, in communion with Rome, and have good standing prior to and after the remission of excommunications including sacramental faculties, when clearly the Pope`s 2009 letter says otherwise. They are wrong. They do not have canonical status and they are in a schismatic position because they reject Vat.II etc. They do not have faculties.

Nice to know that Matthew 16:19 only applies selectively to the Society and not the whole of the Church or what is done onto them.
(End Update Jan 28, 2013)

I would also like to highlight something important for the Laity. While the Church has not issued a ban on attending their masses for Sunday Obligation in cases of dire necessity (e.g. Going and not receiving their ``communion`` vs. violating the obligation), going to their Masses can eventually lead to schism.

Schism is an automatic excommunication action, as it is ``latae sentetiae``

Can. 1314 Generally, a penalty is ferendae sententiae, so that it does not bind the guilty party until after it has been imposed; if the law or precept expressly establishes it, however, a penalty is latae sententiae, so that it is incurred ipso facto when the delict is committed.

Schism is latae sententitae as indicated here:
``Can. 1364 §1. Without prejudice to the prescript of  can. 194, §1, n. 2, an apostate from the faith, a heretic, or a schismatic incurs a latae sententiae excommunication; in addition, a cleric can be punished with the penalties mentioned in  can. 1336, §1, nn. 1, 2, and 3.``

This fact of schism by attending their ìllicit (a.k.a. illegal) Masses which comes about with frequency of attendance has been made clear by the Pontifical Commission of Ecclesia Dei in Rome, in a published correspondence to a layperson who blogs, Brian Mershon, back in 2008. The correspondence is here and I highlight the relevant paragraph:

"While it is true that participation in the Mass at chapels of the Society of St. Pius X does not of itself constitute "formal adherence to the schism" (cf. Ecclesia Dei 5, c), such adherence can come about over a period of time as one slowly imbibes a schismatic mentality which separates itself from the teaching of the Supreme Pontiff and the entire Catholic Church.``

Further, their head, Fellay, who isn't a true bishop of the Church, came at the end of December to administer the "sacrament" of Confirmation. Even though the sacraments were performed according to the EF rites of 1962, and everything materially and literally was likely done correctly, NO SACRAMENT took place as the bishop is an invalid minister not under +Collins or even the Church in Rome under B16, the "Bishop of all bishops". See the clarification letter from 2009 above.

In addition, Fellay even administered one or more "conditional Confirmations" to those who have already received their sacraments in the "Novus Ordo church" and worse, the confirmandi believe their prior Confirmations are defective and therefore they receive a "Conditional confirmation" as if it was to fix the broken sacrament or give what was not there, which is diabolical and theologically wrong!!!! It is a misinterpretation of this Canon Law:

Can. 845 ß1 Because they imprint a character, the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and order cannot be repeated. ß2 If after diligent enquiry a prudent doubt remains as to whether the sacraments mentioned in ß1 have been conferred at all, or conferred validly, they are to be conferred conditionally. "

Furthermore:
"Can. 841 Since the sacraments are the same throughout the universal Church, and belong to the divine deposit of faith, only the supreme authority in the Church can approve or define what is needed for their validity. It belongs to the same authority, or to another competent authority in accordance with can. 838 ß3 and 4, to determine what is required for their lawful celebration, administration and reception and for
the order to be observed in their celebration."

So the SSPX and Fellay lie to their adherents who join them from the main body of the TRUE Catholic Church, when they make them believe that the Novus Ordo Mass and sacraments done under its liturgies are defective and/or invalid. Once a Catholic gets the sacrament at a Confirmation,
- Where the proper form of the rite according to the liturgical books promulgated by the Catholic Church, without abborhent and intentional deviation
- Proper Matter was used in carrying out all aspects of the sacrament according to liturgical law,
- The intent by the Bishop is proper
- The sacrament was performed, by a VALID AND LICITLY ordained bishop by the Holy Father himself, then that Novus Ordo Sacrament is un-doable and unrepeatable.

And I dare you to show me evidence of a Novus Ordo Consecration with grave liturgical violation that made it invalid, like ad-libbing by the bishop, improper words used, etc. Gather hymnal music and a lack of questions from the bishop, or a lukewarm sermon doesn't cut it!

So those Catholics who flocked over to receive confirmation from him got a raw deal, having already had the sacrament. The indelible mark of your ``N.O Comfirmation is signed, sealed, and delivered.`` No take backs.

In addition, while Fellay was here, he went to the provincial SSPX school located in New Hamburg, where he gave a 1.5 hour long diatribe that is now on the Internet on YouTube. With everything above as  background prior to this, I now turn to the main focus of my article, the statement in response to the speech he did in December and the necessary response to the diatribe from the CCCB.

CCCB IN REPLY TO FELLAY`S ``NEW HAMBURG`` SPEECH
Recently, the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops had to make a statement on the matter contained in his 1.5 hour long speech. The speech was for the most part, a diatribe whereby Fellay recounted and commented on the maneuvers between his society and Rome, in the efforts of the Church to reconcile with the SSPX and bring them back to full canonization. I will link to the speech here. Make sure you have a beverage of choice and some popcorn, cause this is a long one and you definitely need spare time to soak it all in. Here.

Unfortunately, in his speech, he made a lot of negative commentary on the negotiations against Rome and in favour of the SSPX being the good side of the conflict, and in particular, some remarks stand out, as highlighted by the Catholic Register in this article:

http://www.catholicregister.org/news/international/item/15637-sspx-head-says-vatican-sent-mixed-messages-during-reconciliation-talks

However, the worst statement made in the speech, which has been pinpointed by Catholic media was this:
``Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the society, said those most opposed to the church granting canonical recognition to the traditionalist society have been "the enemies of the church: the Jews, the Masons, the modernists."`The remarks were made during a nearly two-hour talk Dec. 28 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy in New Hamburg, Ontario.``

While the SSPX has offerered their clarification on the matter, anti-Semitism has always been around the SSPX, particularly in the form of the now kicked out ``bishop`` Williamson. Anybody with a working mind will know they did it to ``save face`` with the society.

Seeing this anti-Semitic statement, the CCCB took charge and released a media statement on it. Here is the full statement, taken from the CCCB site at this location:

CCCB comment on reported remarks by Bishop Fellay, Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X

Friday, January 18 2013

Questions and concerns have been raised following recent media reports about a statement that had been made in Canada by the Superior of the Society of Saint Pius X that “the Jews” are the "enemies of the Church". The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops notes that such remarks are not in accordance with the teaching of the Catholic Church. As the spokesperson for the Holy See, Father Federico Lombardi, S.J., has said when commenting on the statement, “It is absolutely unacceptable, impossible, to define the Jews as enemies of the Church.”

The Second Vatican Council taught in Nostra Aetate, its Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (no. 4): “God holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their Fathers; he does not repent of the gifts he makes or of the calls he issues – such is the witness of the Apostle [Paul].... [T]he Church, mindful of the patrimony she shares with the Jews and moved not by political reasons but by the Gospel's spiritual love, decries hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism, directed against Jews at any time and by anyone." This teaching has been reiterated time and time again by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops denounces all forms of anti-Semitism, and rejects assertions such as those reported to have been made by the Superior of the Society of Saint Pius X, which is a schismatic group not in communion with the Catholic Church.

Now, here is where I will divert from the other Catholic bloggers on the internet with involvement in the Extraordinary Form. As a new generation EF Catholic, a revert, an ``evangelical Catholic`` under the governance of + Cardinal Collins, as he encouraged us to be in 2011 at the Ontario Catholic Youth Weekend, and most importantly an EF partaking young man who attempts in many ways to REJECT the Pharicism and liturgical-over-rigidity sadly expressed by SOME people in the EF and charged by other Catholics in the Church, and demonstrates the positive and true side of it to his contemporaries and young peers, and all those interested and seeking out the EF in the  Church, I MUST SPEAK ABOUT THIS IN A WAY THAT WILL BE DIFFERENT ON THIS MATTER.

I will say the following on this:
1) It is indeed true, that the Bishops` Conferences cannot make definitive statements of Magisterial and competent authority, especially usurping that which is in the Catechism, in our Canon Law, and especially what has been said in matters of faith and morals by our Holy Father(s) (via the doctrine of infallibility of the Popes). This has been outlined in a Vatican II apostolic letter from John Paul II called Apostolos Suos here, especially in the addenums in the end of the document.

2) However, I applaud and say it was rightly just for the CCCB to condemn the statements made by Fellay when he was here, continuing to defy our Church and the Holy Father, with his illicit ``sacramental`` actions and his speech. They deserve credit for the following reasons, regardless of their status of authority:

  • The SSPX give an overall negative and hateful expression of what traditional Catholicism is in the Church, and give our liberal enemies credence to fling further insults at the EF and trads, and for priests to continue lambasting anything with regard to the Latin Mass.
  • As stated before, confused Catholics with valid and licit sacramental marks upon their souls, may in their ignorance wander over to their church and eventually become schismatic, as was warned by the PCED in the personal communication above to Brian Mershon, and partake in the ``fake sacraments`` offered by the SSPX.
  • Because Anti-Semitism flies in the face of Nostra Aetate, and in addition, is NOT in line with Catholic teaching of us to treat all those with human dignity and respect. Further, even Christ did not hate the Jews as a race. Even He said upon the cross about everyone in his crucifixion for his Father to forgive everyone as they don`t know what they are doing. When he got angry or challenged any Jews, it was the Jewish authorities who were hypocrites in their faith and paid too much attention to laws and rules, while not practically adhering to their faith with their fellow man. I will say that one of the bloggers has rightfully criticized the SSPX for such imprudence and promotion of hatred, regardless of their explanation.
  • Because the SSPX, already was associated with anti-Semitism, before it kicked Williamson out of the group
  • Because MOST IMPORTANTLY, it is the bishops` jobs, collectively and individually (especially individually), to safeguard and guide the flock of the faithful in the church as its sheperds and guardians of the Faith, as the active ``officers`` of the Magisterium. The Bishops MUST protect the flock spiritually, both from offensive liberal offences, as well as those of the ultra-Pharisical sides of the faith that threaten the livelihood and eternal salvation of the Church.
3) I disagree with other bloggers of the EF community on their stance with regard to the CCCB. While I personally feel more can be done to address liturgical abuses and other concerns in the institutional Church in Canada, the recent posts have an air of "bishop bashing," a crime that is often committed by those who are more extreme on the conservative Catholic spectrum, particularly who have an internet presence on whatever scale intended,  be it local, state/province wide, or international/the whole Body of the Church.

Some of the writings allude to things such as `they made a statement as if they were the Magisterium` or `they usurp the authority of the Holy Father.` with their ``schismatic`` statement. While the pope has not made an official motu proprio banning the SSPX and their adherents from the church, and the CCCB should only be reiterating what the Magisterium via the Holy Father or Canon Law/Catechism dictates, it is quite obvious the SSPX through their actions, and what they teach as theology and doctrine, (e.g. refusal to accept Vatican II, condemnation of the Novus Ordo) are schismatic in action. This is even more certain with their refusal to sign and agree to those conditions in the doctrinal preamble, especially after the recent hard line transformation of Fellay, post 2012 General Chapter meeting, evidenced in the statement of the Novus Ordo as ``bad`` or ``evil`` in that same New Hamburg speech.

I also disagree with these bloggers due to what can be seen as obvious bias in favour of the SSPX and against our bishops. It is not too much of a stretch to say that some of those who go to the EF DO have associations with those who attend or actively operate with the SSPX, or even share the SSPX views on one or more issues in the Church, and therefore exhibit such bias in their commentary. This is more than just saying that they hope for reconciliation.

In addition, I have been around such people in the past and have had past friends on Facebook who have attended their chapels/illicit Masses more than once, or who espouse/believe in their teachings (e.g. reject the Novus Ordo Mass, contrary to Canon Law both the 1913 and the 1983 codes you are under pang of Mortal Sin to abstain from meat on Fridays ...). On a sadder note, some of them are around my age and are with the SSPX, having fallen for the aesthetics of traditionalism, regardless of what I have mentioned earlier. For those who remain in the diocesan parishes but highly support the SSPX and/or espouse their beliefs, were it not for the penalty of excommunication for schism, these people would likely be flocking over to their chapels, and are waiting hopefully for the reconciliation to do so.

AS WELL, THOSE PEOPLE CAN EXHIBIT THE VERY THINGS THAT LIBERALS CRITICISE TRADITIONAL CATHOLICS/EF ATTENDEES FOR! Unfortunately, those people tend to be the ones, no different from liberals be it in government or in the Church, who take upon themselves to be the mouthpieces of their communities or the institutional church and engage in practices such as "bishop bashing." Sadly, this commentary only further negates the growth and the attitude of those interested in the EF, especially young people. It also shows the very same disrespect of authority that the SSPX demonstrates. Really? Do you think the bishops want to change their ways and listen to you when you do that with a spirit of un-charity? There are more prudent ways to vocalize valid, necessary concerns.

We youth DO NOT want an atmosphere filled with negativity and disrespect. We come to Mass to partake in the rememberance of that Passion, Death, and Resurrection, and it is suppose to nourish us in numerous ways, not be a source of evil and sin that turns us away or leads us to darker paths that separate us from the Body of Christ and reject the EF.  Also, we aren't stupid. We young people, both of Gen X, and especially the ever growing and more faithful Millenial Generation (a.k.a. the Wired generation), are reading our documents and our solid/orthodox Catholic media. We easily know "if it smells like a duck, and waddles like a duck ... it is a duck." We see schismatic actions, and (most of us) are not going to fall for a pseudo-church. We know it, and so does the CCCB.

There, I have said what I needed to say on this matter. And now back to your regularly scheduled S.U.D. programming.

Pax Tibi Christi, Julian Barkin.

P.S. WARNING !!!
I make this clear, I have blog rules in my first post, and if you decide you want to comment on here, you'd better adhere to them. Further, In addition I am highly monitoring the blog, and on this matter I am highly less likely to give you a warning, should your post be despicable and uncharitable, and I will permanently BAN you from posting on here again. Be VERY cautious if you want to reply here and pray before you post. Also, don't even try to harass me by e-mail or phone if you have any of my prior contact information outside of Servimus, as well as my friends or other associations. Else the next step will be to contact my lawyer/the cops. If you want to have a speckled-filled nutty, as Fr. Z puts it, you can always make your own blog and share your thoughts to the world or do it on your own Internet turf. No one's stopping you.

Blessed Chalk! Facts about the Feast of the Epiphany in the Octave of Christmas

My serving ally Robin provided this photo on our Latin Mass associated facebook group so I hope he does not mind me posting this here. Here is the picture with instructions as to what the priest or the head of the household (Father usually speaking) is to do with the blessed chalk and Epiphany holy water, though note one correction: The number at the end should be 13 to mark the year as 2013:
